Cancellieri Shows Brief Sparks of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Haywire Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had allowed 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Unraveling?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or was there ever a binding element maintaining its structure in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him admitted that the management had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were facing for financial irregularities. Rumours that he could resign were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Roman club became as messy during matches as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it has been hard to tell if progress is being made or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Surprising Presence

A single player remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He spent the last one on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were pushing for him to stay there for another season. The signing restriction forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived originally under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, almost all of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."

Finding His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to identify the exact type of his skill set. Billed as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
