Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
